Setting goals and reaching them part 1
Have you ever wondered why – although you are working very hard, you are not getting anywhere significant in your life?
Ever thought about what your life would be like if you could use your full potential to fulfill your ultimate dreams?
We all set goals during our life span, few of us actually reach them, many of us give up on their dreams because they fail to turn them into attainable goals or profitable businesses. They eventually settle for a career that can provide them some stability with less internal development and satisfaction.
I also know that most of us are not properly taught how to effectively set goals. With that in mind, this article offers you the three key principles to setting goals. This article is divided to three parts to really allow you to fully comprehend the art of setting goals. There are many resources online, but these are the principles I apply in my personal and professional performance, here is part one:
Setting your Long-term Vision:
Without a long-term vision, you sail and drift to unknown lands with no particular direction. A long-term vision of your future functions like a compass, keeps you directed and on the right track. Get a paper and a pen; and write all your answers down. This is important because having the answers on paper will keep you focused and alert, always reminding you of your ultimate purpose. You can place that paper later on when you are done, somewhere where you can always come back to it to check it and retail it from time to time. Now, use your imagination to answer these specific questions to encompass all aspects of your life.
Where do I want to be in five, ten and even twenty years?
What do I want to achieve?
What career level do I want to reach?
Do I want to keep my current job?
Do I want to start my own business?
Do I need to learn new skills to allow me to get there?
Is there any specific knowledge to acquire to help me achieve these goals?
How much time do I want to be working?
How much do I want to earn?
Do I want to be married and start a family?
Do I want to grow older in good health?
Do I want to reach any athletic goals?
What are the measures that I am willing to take?
Do I want to develop any artistic skills or hobbies?
How will I be enjoying myself? (Be specific)
Is there any current behavior that is upsetting me today?
Is there a certain mindset I need to acquire to make this easier on myself?
Spend some time brainstorming and studying your options. After answering these questions on a piece of paper, you will find that you have covered almost every facet of your professional, fitness and personal development. You can also add questions that seem right for you. Then consider trimming your answers to have a smaller amount of significant goals to focus on. Setting your long-term vision gives you perspective to shape your decision-making on the long run and keep you motivated daily.
Stay tuned for part two of properly setting goals & reaching them; where we will discuss the 5 main criteria every goal you have written down needs to meet.
